Plus Size = Curvalicious = Plus Model Tara Lynn

[ READ Part TWO Here:  BELLE VERRE – STEVEN MEISEL: Vogue Italia – June 2011 – that’s  a follow-up story to this one]

Today, fortunately, women with voluptuous curves and real flesh and a sizable amount of heft are being admired as “real women”.
Even wolf-whistled at, and commented on, as in the 50′s and 60′s.
Whether the latter is a good or bad thing thing depends on which side of the feminist debate you come from.
To me, when women who were ridiculed, insulted and asked to “lose weight”, “eat less” or stop eating are now admired, in whatever fashion or form, that can’t be bad.
They are now being accepted as normal – not unusual.
Tara Lynn – Curvy French PLUS Size Model

Being thin and perky is not the norm anymore and that’s a good thing because it means the clock is now swinging back to good sense.

That does not mean that being thin or perky is bad as long as you are naturally so and not as a result of societal pressures or crazy-ass diets and fads. It also means that being curvy, bootylicious or voluptuous does not equate to being morbidly obese.
Being abnormally thin or anorexic or obese – any extreme is not a good thing for your health and wellbeing.

Tara Lynn – Curvy French PLUS Size Model

Tara Lynn is the incredibly curvy amazing beauty who has captured the attention of the fashion world is one of the most well known plus size models. She started out by appearing online for Nordstrom and since then has taken off like a well padded rocket.

She is the face of Brazilian lingerie company, Plià for their Shape Wear collection for plus sizes.
She has also been prominently featured in Elle & Glamour magazines. She has been one of many convention breaking models who have appeared in magazines wanting to highlight girls women who are ‘ronde’.

V Magazine used her in their shoot Curves Ahead in 2010 when they were celebrating ‘real’ women. She appeared alongside other plus sized models Candice Huffine, Kasia P, Michelle Olson and Marquita Pring (seen below).

French Elle featured Tara Lynn on the cover and in a twenty-page-long editorial, for the magazine’s first celebration of ‘ronde’ women in the April 2010 issue.
H&M fashion chain in the UK have Tara Lynn proudly displaying her curves in a bathing suit for the latest Big is Beautiful collection (H&M’s last campaign starred ultra-thin supermodel Gisele Bundchen).
In June 2011, Vogue Italia also sported THREE Plus-Size Models on a cover and feature shot by Steven Meisel starring Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine, and Robyn Lawley in black and white, marking the first time plus-size models have graced the magazine’s cover since the days of Sophie Dahl in 2000.

Vogue Italia June 2011 – Plus Size Models

Plus size girls unashamedly flaunt full thighs, stomach rolls and love handles (things that would normally be airbrushed out on a high fashion magazine) whilst wearing everything from figure-hugging Agent Provocateur bodysuits to cut-out Gucci swimsuits.

Sure, a whole bunch of advertisers who have suddenly discovered a potentially huge and hungry market are suddenly very keen to jump on the curvy, voluptuous, “plus size” bandwagon.
And Ok, it may be opportunistic or even exploitative. But like wolf-whistles, if advertisers are heralding a new era of respect,  acceptance and (OMG!!) adoration of the plus size woman, then hey, I don’t see it as a bad thing at all.

Here’s a self-explanatory lil story I found on the interwebz about curvy women:

A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was “This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?”

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

“Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defends and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I’d rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn’t enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: “How amazing am I ?! “

To which I say, “Bravo” & Amen!

  1. I don’t typically fit into the character of a plus size model being a size 8/10, however, I have entered stage competitions where my feedback has been ‘you just don’t have the look were after, we need someone who can fit into our clothing and pull it off’ which I don’t think they realise but after a while these comments add up. I might be a small build but I have a large bust and I DO have rolls and I DO have a stomach, the fact is this is who I am and how I was made!! As long as your happy with yourself that should be all that matters because there is always someone out there who will cal you beautiful and sexy. I’ve been put down a lot when doing competitions and shoots because I’m not skinny enough and don’t have ‘the look’ but truth is I love how I look and my roll make me me and frankly think its kinda cute. So be proud of who you are and flaunt what you have (curves), there are lots of people who think your stunning!!

  2. “love the skin your in, it’s the only one you’ve got”

  3. “Never let your worth be decided by another”

  4. I USUALLY THINK THAT AT MY SIZE NOW… I LOST MY CONFIDENCE IN CAPTIVATING POSITIVE ATTENTION BUT SOMEHOW I CAN SAY THAT IT IS JUST A NEGATIVE REACTION…MANY PEOPLE WOULD TELL ME, YOU ARE STILL BEAUTIFUL BUT YOU DOUBLE UP YOUR SIZE…THEN I WOULD SMILE AND TELL THEM…I LOVE TO EAT. EATING DELICIOUS FOOD AT ANYTIME THAT I WANTED MAKES ME HAPPY ESPECIALLY IF I AM WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.YUP! IT IS NOT GOOD AS THE DOCTOR’S WOULD PROBABLY SAY.. HOWEVER, I THINK ITS NOT JUST MY BODY WHO EATS FOOD BUT ALSO MY SOUL.. THAT’S WHY I DON’T CONTROL MYSELF BY OPPRESSION TO MAKE MYSELF HAPPY… YES.. I LIKE TO HAVE SLENDER BODY BUT I HAVE THIS SEXY FIGURE WITH MY ICE CREAM AND CAKE THAT WOULD MAKE ME SMILE THROUGH OUT THE DAY….LOVE YOUR BODY AND TREAT IT WELL.

  5. I’m sold!!!
